Marionette Puppet Art Postcards: Vintage American Marionettes Rustic Art Prints, Set of 20

Vintage American Marionettes — 20 Postcard Set

A wonderfully strange cast of puppets, performers, devils, soldiers, ladies, monsters, and other theatrical characters drawn from the Index of American Design, one of the great visual archives of American folk and decorative art.

These images were created during the 1930s and early 1940s as part of the Federal Art Project, the Index of American Design employed artists to make extraordinarily detailed watercolor records of historic American objects held in museums, private collections, shops, churches, and homes. The project ultimately produced more than 18,000 drawings documenting everything from furniture and toys to textiles, signs, folk sculpture—and marionettes. National Gallery of Art

This set collects 20 of the collection’s most unusual marionette designs, preserving their hand-painted colors, eccentric costumes, expressive faces, and unmistakable folk-art character. Originally intended as documentary records, the drawings have an uncanny personality of their own: part theater history, part American folk art, and part beautifully bizarre visual archive.

Each image has been carefully selected and reproduced as a 4 × 6 inch postcard, suitable for mailing, framing, collecting, or displaying as a set.

Set includes 20 different postcards. Printed in the USA.
